He listed streets the draft code would designate as freight routes, including Myra Road (from the railroad north of Rose to Whitman Drive), sections of West Whitman Drive, Northwest Evans (providing access to a former Blaze King building and maintenance area), Mid January Road up to College Avenue, portions of College Avenue and Wallula Avenue (already a county freight route), Northeast Rose Street to the eastern city limits, and Southwest Meadowbrook Boulevard from Sydney Lane at the Walmart intersection to State Route 125.
Staff said formal designation matters because when a street is designated as an official freight route the city can become eligible for grant programs to repair and upgrade pavement and related infrastructure; absent a formal designation the city has been ineligible for some funding.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions; no motion or vote on the code amendment occurred during the meeting. Staff indicated the designation would position the city proactively for grant opportunities linked to freight and the Martin Airfield plan.
