Council accepts $1 million state grant to fund environmental cleanup at Auburn Place affordable housing site

Pontiac officials said the city has authorization from the council to accept a $1,000,000 grant from the State of Michigan to support site cleanup and remediation for a 54-unit affordable housing development at 454 Auburn Road, known as Auburn Place Apartments.
Grants staff told council the funding will remove environmental impediments so construction can proceed on the five‑story, 54‑unit development. “This grant is specifically for remediating the dirt on the land where this development project is taking place,” Grants Director Lisa Campbell said. Staff asked council to approve a budget amendment and the council voted to accept the funds and authorize posting so the budget can be updated when the award arrives.
Council moved and approved a posting resolution so the award can be incorporated into the current fiscal year budget; administration said funds are anticipated to arrive before June 30 so the project can proceed without delay.
Why it matters: The city called the Auburn redevelopment a key housing investment. The grant funds are intended to remove contamination and allow a new affordable housing project to move into construction.
What’s next: Administration will post the grant award and return to council with a budget amendment to formally accept and allocate the $1,000,000.
