Students push for stronger student advisory role; district launches core-values steering committee

A group of juniors pursuing the state-required civics action project told the superintendent they want to elevate student voice by creating a student advisory (or student-school-committee) body and having a student representative take a more active role on the school committee, including regular meetings between the committee and student advisory council.

Superintendent Dr. Smith met with the juniors and said the students researched relevant legislation and that state law includes expectations for school-committee interaction with student advisory councils. He told the committee he would place the topic on a future agenda and that students may request a joint meeting with a committee member and the superintendent to discuss logistics: selection or election of representatives, meeting frequency, advisor needs and appropriate scopes of influence. Student representative Ms. Powers described the students' preference for a student-led advisory body with one student representative to the school committee acting as a conduit.

Separately, the district formed a core-values steering committee to gather community feedback and draft district core values. The superintendent said the steering committee established norms, reviewed exemplars and finalized a survey that was sent to the school community; the next meeting will begin survey analysis and the group will ultimately present draft values to the school committee.

The superintendent and committee members noted many school-committee agenda items are business-focused and that some student interests may be better addressed at the school level; discussion will continue on how to structure student voice so it is meaningful and aligned with governance responsibilities.
