Organic Life reports rising meal participation; early education center gets warming kitchen

Organic Life, the district’s food service provider, updated the Round Lake board on meal participation and operations May 5.
Erica Arlinski of Organic Life introduced Kent Baer, the new district manager for Round Lake food service, and reported higher participation in breakfast, lunch, supper and snack categories for the current year (data covered August–March). Arlinski said the district’s Early Education Center opened a warming kitchen on Feb. 25, allowing hot meals to be prepared on-site rather than delivered cold from the high school.
Arlinski described recent outreach events including National School Breakfast Week and a world-language night where the district offered a ramen bar as a new menu item. She said Organic Life plans a “pasta challenge” cook-off with student involvement and invited board members to judge.
Looking ahead to next year, Organic Life said it will pursue a signage refresh in cafeterias, an equipment evaluation to identify needs, the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program grant, and a School Breakfast Expansion grant to add hot-protein breakfast items. Board members asked about timelines: signage could occur over the summer; equipment changes would likely extend into the next school year and be funded using food-service fund balances (proceeds of the program must remain in the food-service fund). Members also asked about contingency planning for possible federal funding changes to free school meals; administration said it had not received definitive guidance and would notify the board if changes appeared imminent.
