The Round Lake Area Schools Board of Education honored student achievements May 5.
Tony Serna of the Round Lake Area Exchange Club presented the Exchange Club Youth of the Year award to senior Zeltzin Zapeda Solis. Serna and Superintendent Brian (presenter name in transcript) praised her academic record and leadership. Zapeda Solis, who said she will attend Loyola University Chicago to begin nursing studies, told the board she has logged โhundreds of hoursโ of community service and credited Round Lake High School educators for supporting first-generation college students.
The board also heard Project Lead The Way capstone presentations. Student teams described projects including an RC snowblower that doubles as a salt spreader and a metro-station redesign for a downtown area. Presenters described material and timing challenges during construction and how they revised prototypes.
Board members and administrators thanked students for their work and noted the capstones demonstrate applied learning and career-and-technical education outcomes.
