Tahlequah updates progress on ballfields expansion; turf, dugouts and utilities nearing completion

Ray Hendricks, special projects coordinator, briefed the council May 5 on the city’s athletic-field expansion, saying crews plan to lay turf on the final field within about a week and a half.
Hendricks said the parks department’s welder, Justin Jackson, has the materials and will begin fabricating dugouts; crews expect to install shade poles at a seating area near the fields within a month. Hendricks said the city’s utility contractor (TPWA) will begin sewer, water and electric work soon and staff hopes to energize the field lights within about a month.
A local coach and parent, identified in the meeting as a resident/coach, praised the new turf during the update: “The turf has been phenomenal this year...we lost one day of sports at [amphitheater] — which was on two different Thursdays — it rained all the way up until midafternoon, and we still played at 6:00. The turf has been phenomenal as far as getting games in.”
Councilors asked about the concession-stand bid schedule; staff said bids are due on the 21st (date referenced in the meeting). No formal council action was required on the report; the item was informational and staff will return with bidding outcomes and construction progress reports.
