Councilors press for better tracking and durable repairs after repeated street cutouts and potholes

Councilors on the streets committee pressed city staff Monday to improve tracking of street cutouts and to use installation practices that produce longer-lasting repairs.

Councilors said repeated cutouts and partially repaired holes are creating hazards for drivers. A councilor asked for dates on cutout reports and suggested a single, continuous spreadsheet so members can track outstanding work. The service director said current cutout reports come from the water distribution/collection group and that other departments perform cuts (gas, storm, streets), which complicates a single-source report. He agreed staff could maintain a consolidated running list of cutouts and repairs.

Repair methods: Councilors asked crews to use tampers when patching potholes; staff said tamper use slows work but agreed to follow up with crews to emphasize proper compaction. Committee members also discussed the Durapatch product used in some areas; the service director said Durapatch performs well under the right conditions and that the city had approved a purchase order for the emulsion used with the product.

Why it matters: Repaired streets that fail quickly burden taxpayers and create vehicle-damage risks. Councilors requested clearer reporting and better on-site practices to reduce repeat repairs.
