La Porte council approves amendment on Hunter Woods project; city to install water main and complete paving work

The La Porte City Common Council on May 5 approved a second amendment to the development agreement with Park Street Community LLC related to the Hunter Woods apartment project.
Under the amendment, the developer will pay the city $65,000 toward the city’s work repaving Seavers Road, and the city’s water department will install multiple water-main improvements on and near the multifamily parcel. The amendment details city work including a 16-inch water main from the Thomas Rose Industrial Park to Park Street, 8-inch water mains to connect at Coomber Drive, hydrants and valves to city specifications, service stubs for the apartments, and related fittings. The amendment also specifies roadway reconstruction on Seavers Road: backfill and stone placement, 4.5 inches of HMA base and an inch-and-a-half HMA surface overlay.
Bert Cook, executive director of the La Porte Economic Advancement Partnership, described the amendment as a cost‑sharing and efficiency decision: "We're kind of trading off on those two as well as the paving that occurs along Seavers Road once everything is completed. So they're paying us $65,000 and then we're doing some of the water work because our department can do it more efficiently," Cook said. He told the council the water infrastructure work is scheduled for mid‑July and paving should begin as soon as practical.
The amendment was drafted by counsel for the Redevelopment Commission and signed by the developer; the council approved the amendment by voice vote. Council members thanked residents for their patience during construction and noted the project is nearing completion.
The city will coordinate construction with Duneland Group Engineering designs and continue to update the Board of Public Works and council as work progresses.
