South Lyon — At the April 28 meeting Police Chief Bakke reported grant funding to support new cadets and other department updates; City Manager Zelnick later told council Chief Bakke will retire with a last day scheduled for July 9.
Chief Bakke reported the department procured optics for rifles and successfully qualified officers with the new equipment. He said the department completed two interviews for a police officer opening and will begin a background check for a candidate who completed a ride-along.
Regarding cadet training, Chief Bakke said the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) approved grants for the city’s new cadets. On the record he said the grants were approved at $20,000 each and that the incoming cadets’ orientation is May 1 with academy start May 5; the academy runs about four months with expected completion around Sept. 5, after which the graduates will enter field training. He also said the department’s recent drug take-back produced slightly more than 222 pounds of medication handed to the DEA for destruction.
In the city manager’s report, City Manager Zelnick announced Chief Bakke’s retirement effective July 9 and said the city will begin recruitment to fill the chief’s position.
Council members thanked department staff for recent public-facing activities and for community outreach such as hydrant flushing and the drug take-back program.
