On May 5 the La Porte City Common Council reviewed annual compliance (CF-1) statements from five businesses receiving property tax abatements and voted individually to certify each company’s filing so the city meets county submittal requirements.
City staff member Mr. Phillips presented the CF-1 details and staff recommendations. He told the council the action was needed to meet county filing timelines. "It is important that we take action on this on each of these requests this evening so that we meet the May 15 deadline for submittal to the county," Phillips said.
The council certified the following actions after review of reported employment, wages and investment figures: - B and B Manufacturing: staff recommended and the council certified "substantial compliance." Phillips reported 44 full-time employees and reported salaries of $4,541,545, and real and personal property investments above original estimates. - Halmet Casting and Services: staff recommended and the council certified "substantial compliance." Phillips reported 352 full-time employees and $30,731,275 in salaries; real property investment notably exceeded original estimates. - LaPorte 401 MP RK 6 LLC (Remedy): the council found the property owner made a "reasonable effort to comply." The CF-1 showed the property owner itself reported zero employees; staff reported the primary occupant, Northwest Health, employs 13 full-time staff at the site with reported compensation figures supplied to staff. - Patrick Industries, Inc.: the council certified "reasonable effort to comply." The current CF-1 reported 15 full-time employees and reported salaries below the original estimate; personal property investment was reported slightly higher than originally estimated. - Pine Lake Development LLC: the council certified "reasonable effort to comply." Phillips noted actual employment of 95 compared with an earlier estimate of 65 and investment figures slightly below previous estimates.
Council members made and seconded individual motions for each certification; each motion passed by voice vote. Staff indicated additional abatement recipients have not yet submitted CF-1 forms because their projects remain incomplete and that further certifications are expected when forms are filed.
The council’s certifications will be forwarded to the county for processing.
