Council approves $360,000 grant to Detroit Public Safety Foundation for youth violence-prevention work

The Public Health and Safety Standing Committee approved a $360,000 grant-funded contract on Monday to continue youth violence-prevention programming managed through the Detroit Public Safety Foundation.
Captain Roberson, speaking for the Detroit Police representatives in the meeting, said the grant will fund community partnership work and training aimed at reducing gun violence. “The primary purpose of this grant is to partnership with the community to reduce gun violence in the community,” he said, and added community education and training are core program elements.
Committee members asked about partners and outcomes. Captain Roberson said the initiative will work with the Detroit Public Safety Foundation as subrecipient and partner with Life Remodeled Durfee Center, Boys & Girls Club, the Del High Center, Russell Woods Sullivan, Metro Detroit Youth Club for community education, and Wayne State University as the research partner. Committee members asked for outcome data; staff said they would follow up with impact and evaluation materials.
The committee approved the contract without objection and sent the item to new business with a recommendation for approval.
Council members emphasized the need for data on program outcomes to support continued funding. Committee staff agreed to request annual reports and research findings from Wayne State so the committee can assess effectiveness of the funded programs.
