Kennedy established National Police Week by presidential proclamation (Proclamation 3466) and that law-enforcement agencies across the country observe the week; nationally, the speaker said, 147 officers were killed in the line of duty last year and that so far this year 24 officers have died in the line of duty, 23 by gunfire.
Locally, the speakers said the candlelight vigil will be held at the Longview Civic Circle on the evening of May 14 at 7 p.m., and they requested the county read and adopt the proclamation the next day. The speaker also said the local observance includes a roll call of officers who died in the line of duty and remembrance of police canines.
A commissioner said he had not yet seen the draft proclamation but agreed to read it at the next meeting; staff confirmed the proclamation was on the upcoming agenda for approval.
