The Auburn City Council voted May 5 to accept the Safe Streets for All (SS4A) report and to adopt an updated Vision Zero traffic-safety resolution aimed at reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities.
Councilors voted 7–0 to accept the SS4A report and 7–0 to adopt the Vision Zero (referred to in the meeting as "Vision 0") update. The council previously held a workshop on the SS4A plan; at the meeting staff and Maine Department of Transportation representatives had provided an earlier overview.
Councilors described the Vision Zero resolution as a policy guide rather than a commitment to specific projects. "It doesn't commit the city to any particular action," a councilor asked; staff replied that the resolve recognizes a goal and helps prioritize transportation improvements that reduce hazards across modes and strengthens grant applications for future safety funding.
Councilors asked about high-risk local locations, including Main Street and crosswalks near Festival Plaza, and staff said they would coordinate with MDOT and public works to seek scheduling and mitigation information and pursue repairs or patches if the state schedule is far out. The manager noted the city uses the pledge when applying for grants to leverage funding and to prioritize safety in future transportation work.
Both items passed with unanimous council support; no public speakers addressed these items at the meeting.
