Representatives of the Jefferson Highway Association and local historical groups told the Atoka City Council that the association’s annual conference will include a bus tour on June 5 that stops in Atoka and Stringtown between roughly 12:45 p.m. and 4 p.m. Organizers said they expect one or two buses (40–80 people) and asked local businesses and event organizers to prepare for visitors.
Becky Richards, representing the Stringtown Historical Foundation, explained the tour will travel from McAlister through Atoka and on to Durant; attendees come from across the U.S. and sometimes from other countries. She urged downtown merchants to be ready for visitors during the two‑hour stop and said planners hope the visit will generate tourism business beyond the single day.
Council members raised logistics questions, including restroom access: with downtown bathrooms closed for construction, the council agreed to investigate placing temporary portable toilets for the bus tour and other upcoming events. Staff said they would look into accommodations and coordinate with the chamber and business contacts. Organizers also discussed a narrative script for the bus and local points of interest to be distributed to tour participants.
Organizers asked the council to publicize the event to downtown merchants and prepare businesses for the mid‑day influx. The council agreed to follow up on restroom logistics and other support as the date approaches.
