Mayor's proposed budget includes new line for Human Relations Commission; language-access funding highlighted

The Metro Nashville Human Relations Commission reported Tuesday that the mayor's proposed budget includes a direct appropriation for the commission, and staff said the package contains funds intended to support language-access work.

Director Davy Tucker told commissioners the commission's inclusion in the mayor's budget marked a shift from prior years when the commission relied on council augmentations. While staff said the commission requested a larger three-year budget, they described the mayor's proposed first-year funding level as roughly $300,000 and called it a substantial increase relative to the commission's typical annual operating size.

A staff financial update at the meeting said the commission ended the fiscal year under budget, in part because several positions remained vacant and salary savings were redirected toward initiatives such as the Humans Over Hate/No Hate on My Plate work.

Staff characterized the budget process as collaborative with the mayor's office and finance teams and said that the commission had presented to Metro department heads earlier in the year to highlight language-access needs. Commissioners asked whether to pursue additional funding via the council; staff said that option remained under consideration but no formal decision had been made.

The commission did not adopt any formal budget action at the meeting; staff said they would continue to evaluate whether to request supplemental funding from the council based on the final adopted mayoral budget and changing fiscal conditions.
