Residents of North Kansas City urged the Clay County Commission during public comment to oppose a proposed stadium and to require a local vote before the county endorses or funds the project. The comments were delivered at the county commission meeting during a public-comment period.
Several residents described potential local impacts they say were not fully addressed. A resident identified in the record as Dave (resident of North Kansas City) said, “Me, personally, I don’t want the stadium,” and asked the commission to help ensure North Kansas City voices are included in any decision-making. Mindy Hart Davis, identified as a North Kansas City resident and former business owner there, said the development could change the “texture of a town” where people bought homes under existing conditions and that residents should be allowed to vote on proposals that would affect their neighborhoods.
Speakers repeatedly raised concerns about noise, traffic, public-safety demands and infrastructure strain. Residents said a stadium placed near homes could increase night-time noise, raise vehicle traffic and require added police and emergency resources. Mindy Hart Davis asked whether liability for upgrades to streets, parking, water and levee/flood protections would fall to local taxpayers. She also warned of the risk of a vacant stadium becoming blight if a major tenant later leaves.
Commissioner Johnson asked whether the speaker opposed the stadium outright or wanted conditions; the resident replied he opposed it. County staff advised residents that written comments may be submitted to the county administrator for distribution to commissioners, and the presiding commissioner invited residents to participate at the city level as well.
The commission did not take any formal action on the stadium during the meeting. Commissioners and staff encouraged continued engagement: Commissioner Carpenter thanked speakers for coming and urged them to also contact North Kansas City city officials and council members, while the presiding commissioner reiterated that written comments submitted to the administrator’s office will be circulated to the commission.
The public commenters said they plan to press city and county officials further and to present their concerns directly to the North Kansas City City Council and other bodies.
Ending: The commission did not schedule a public hearing or vote on the stadium at this session. Administrators invited speakers to submit written comments to the administrator’s office for distribution to commissioners, and residents said they will continue to pursue meetings with city council members and other local officials.
