Commission approves deck repairs for NE 100th Street bridge over Clear Creek

Tom Degenhardt, road and bridge director, told the commission the 1970 steel-stringer bridge is about 90 feet long with a roughly 24-foot roadway and a posted 16-ton weight limit; annual average daily traffic (AADT) is about 184 and the bridge sufficiency rating is 51.7 out of 100. A MoDOT bridge engineering assistance program (BEAP) evaluation identified concrete deck deterioration, failed joints and other substructure issues.
Degenhardt said the BEAP estimates for restoring the span varied: a full replacement would be about $2 million, a complete rehabilitation (keeping the steel stringers) about $809,000, and targeted deck repairs about $115,000. Staff used the county’s term supply contract for infrastructure improvements and solicited bids from three approved vendors; She Digs It did not respond, Mega KC submitted a higher bid, and Decker Construction was the low and recommended bidder. If approved, the county expects construction to begin in June and last 10 to 12 weeks with one lane remaining open and traffic control in place.
Commissioner Wagner asked where a full closure detour would route traffic; Degenhardt answered that a detour would likely use Jesse James Road to Highway 69, but staff stressed that the approved deck-repair approach should avoid a full closure by keeping one lane open. Commissioner Johnson moved to approve the resolution; the motion passed on a 6-0 roll call.
