Council told waste-to-energy contract items are for routine repairs while facility's future is under review

City staff told the Spokane City Council at its May 12 agenda briefing that three consent-agenda items tied to the city's waste-to-energy facility are routine repairs and maintenance to keep operations running while the facility's longer-term future is evaluated.
"In these cases, we're talking about repairs and maintenance items that we'll have to keep the facility running and operating on a regular basis," said Marlene, a city presenter. She said the city plans to continue legislative work for the 2026 season and will evaluate larger purchases against that timeline.
Marlene said the items before council are smaller expenditures and that larger capital investments would be vetted to ensure they align with the expected timeline for any longer-term decisions. She described ongoing evaluation as the city considers the property's somewhat uncertain future and said the larger purchases would be timed appropriately.
No ordinance or final policy decision was reached at the briefing; the items were presented on the consent agenda for routine repair and maintenance work pending council action.
