Laboratory staff summarized testing activity for July 1–Oct. 30. The lab received 42 furniture samples for TB 117-2013 smoldering tests; 93% passed and 7% failed. Eleven mattress samples were received and 78% of completed mattress samples passed 16 C.F.R. 1633 open-flame testing; 22% failed. The lab reported no insulation samples during the period and said it tested 20 bedding samples; all bedding samples passed.
The lab also reviewed labeling on tested samples: 14% fully complied with label requirements, 56% had minor deficiencies, 26% had moderate deficiencies and 4% had major failures. Lab staff said 61% of completed TB 117-2013 furniture samples were made overseas; 32% were made in California and 7% in other U.S. states.
On aromatic flame-retardant (AFR) chemical screening, lab staff said 8 samples were sent to the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) for further testing and documentation requests; three had been cleared by DTSC and the remaining samples were still in progress.
