Bureau announces retirements, promotions and plan to reclassify lab chemist series

Deputy Bureau Chief Rita Wong told the advisory council that three long-term bureau employees have announced upcoming retirements: Carrie Cathalafod, supervising chemist in the laboratory; Zenny Mercado, an inspector for home furnishings and thermal insulation; and Karen Skelton, the bureau licensing manager.
Wong and other council members thanked the employees for long service. Karen Skelton said she will hand off her ad hoc reports and materials to her successor.
Wong also announced internal promotions and new hires: Kara Williams was hired as a research data specialist assigned to mover fee schedule and tariff studies; Alda Aguirre was promoted to supervising special investigator for Southern California; Nick Parra was promoted to associate governmental program analyst for field support; Stephanie Carruth and RJ Alarcon were hired as Staff Services Analysts in compliance; Christina Bustamante and Ashley Bridal were hired as office technicians.
On the laboratory staff, the bureau obtained approval to reclassify the chemist series to the environmental scientist classification. Wong said the chemist classification yields a small candidate pool and broader environmental scientist qualifications will ease recruitment; the bureau plans to hire three environmental scientists and a senior environmental scientist supervisor to replace and expand the lab team.
