The Nogales Library Board discussed a comprehensive update to the system’s acquisitions and weeding policies, which staff said were last fully rewritten in February 2004 and need modernization for the library’s current systems and formats.
Library Director Danica said staff are working to update the manual to reflect Polaris (the current integrated library system), digital and streaming resources such as Hoopla, and the county system’s four branches and mobile library. “We don't have Millennium anymore. As you know, we have Polaris,” Danica told the board.
Vice Chairman Juanita Havel led questions about operational details: whether there is an age limit for library cards, shelving capacity after recent flooring projects, and how selection decisions are made. Danica said there is no age limit for cards and provided the selection resources staff consult, including School Library Journal, Horn Book online and New York Times reviews, plus advice from regional colleagues and the Amigos network.
Board members pressed for more Spanish‑language materials. A trustee observed, “the library is missing a bigger section of Spanish books… not only for kids, also for adults.” Danica said the system will expand Spanish titles and rotate replacements across branches.
Staff said they will compile edits, merge an already‑updated book‑challenge policy, and return a revised policy packet for board review before submission to mayor and council. The board asked members to email suggested revisions to Danica or Brian to expedite finalization.
