Lee County Commission approves consent agenda and several local items, proclaims April Financial Literacy Month

Financial literacy proclamation: The commission unanimously approved a motion to declare April as Financial Literacy Month in Lee County after a short presentation by Dr. Nate Dunlap of the PRF Institute, a nonprofit that provides financial-literacy programs. Dr. Dunlap said his organization has worked in the community for several years and highlighted that the State of Alabama now requires a high-school financial literacy course as a graduation requirement.
ABC liquor license: The commission approved an application to add an off-premise wine license to an existing off-premise beer license for Store 109, located on Auburn Road in Phenix City (District 3). Staff said the store previously held an off-premise beer license and had omitted the wine portion when earlier approvals were done.
Preliminary plat — Sweet Home Estates Phase 1: County highway staff presented a preliminary plat for a subdivision off Lee Road 158 in Commission District 4 that would create six lots. The plan shows a cul-de-sac serving five of the lots while the remaining lot retains road frontage. No adjacent-property objections were presented; the commission approved the preliminary plat.
Beulah Park capital project: The commission approved a capital project to build a batting-cage structure at Beulah Park. County staff said the project will be funded from the Beulah recreation allocation and that County Risk Services has confirmed it will cover the structure’s liability. The estimated budget presented was around $150,000, including design and architect fees; the item will be bid out.
Votes were recorded as unanimous on each item. Commissioners asked staff for ongoing updates where appropriate and for public notification about progress on projects and events.
