The New Haven Health Department on Monday asked the Board of Alders’ committee to approve moving forward with a three-year, $1.62 million grant proposal for a youth tobacco-prevention initiative called BREEVE.
The proposal, presented by Director Elizabeth Vaughn of the New Haven Health Department, seeks roughly $540,000 per year for three years (a total of $1,620,000) from the Connecticut Department of Public Health to expand education, outreach and enforcement aimed at reducing tobacco and e-cigarette use and secondhand exposure among residents, with a primary focus on people ages 12–24.
BREEVE would support a mix of strategies across schools and community settings, including an evidence-based social media campaign targeted at teens and young adults, peer-driven campaign components that let youth co-create materials, extracurricular prevention activities delivered through community health workers, and place-based school and community programming.
