Murray — The Capital Projects and Bond Oversight Committee unanimously authorized Murray State University to use institutional, self-generated revenues to replace the roof on the Kerr Center, the university told the committee on April 3.
Jordan Smith, assistant vice president for public affairs at Murray State University, said the project is estimated at about $1,500,000 to replace nearly 33,000 square feet of built-up, flat roofing on the student center. Smith told the committee the building was constructed in 1981 and the roof was last replaced in 1990; the university hopes to begin work in early summer 2025.
The committee moved and approved the interim authorization during the meeting. Representative Walker Thomas made the motion to accept the request; Chair Petrie seconded. The roll call recorded all members present voting yes.
Committee members asked whether recent storms had caused flooding on campus; Smith said Murray State “did not have significant flooding damage” compared with neighboring counties. No amendments or follow-up directions were recorded.
Project details provided to the committee indicated the work is funded from institutional (non-state) revenues under the university’s authority to manage capital projects financed from such sources. No additional state appropriation or loan was requested at the hearing.
The committee recorded the vote as unanimous; the committee did not attach additional conditions or reporting requirements to the interim authorization.
