The planning commission on May 1 approved a project to replace multiple aging structures at the Civic Center pool complex, 8600 Munson Road, consolidating restrooms, concessions and lifeguard facilities into new, accessible buildings.
Kenneth Kaminski, the city’s parks and recreation director, said the project will remove five existing 1980-era buildings and replace them with fewer, larger structures designed for year-round family restrooms, accessible changing areas and a centralized lifeguard station. “Our goal is to start construction in August and have it open next June,” Kaminski said, outlining a schedule that ties the project to other site improvements including parking-lot work and a new water slide already under construction.
Administration noted five conditions and the commission voted unanimously to approve the site alteration with those conditions. Commissioners asked about materials, roof type and screening of mechanical equipment; Kaminski said the project will use dark metal roofing, stone accents and screened mechanicals and that the department will add substantial landscaping and replace perimeter fencing with dark-colored screening.
The parks department said the new layout improves sight lines for lifeguards and will make maintenance and operations more efficient. The project will proceed to bid, and staff said substantial tree plantings from the city’s tree farm will accompany the work over the next two years.
