The Mentor Planning Commission on May 1 approved a proposal to paint a large mural and make related site improvements at Corduroy’s Pizza, 9131 Jordan Drive, subject to four conditions from staff.
Proponent Brandon Stroud described the mural as a community-focused panorama intended to celebrate the Headlands neighborhood and serve as a civic gateway. Stroud told commissioners he is leading the effort through his nonprofit and that the business owner supports the project. He said the artist, Nick Beebe, will donate time and that appropriate primers and protective coatings are planned to ensure longevity.
City staff noted outstanding maintenance items on the property and said the commission generally expects applicants who propose enhancements to address other deferred repairs as part of a complete submittal. Stroud said the owner had begun addressing several noted items and that the conditions were reasonable.
The approved conditions include screening the dumpster, using durable paint and protective coatings recommended by the artist, addressing on-site maintenance items identified in the staff report, and providing a plan for long-term upkeep. Commissioners also suggested creative options for screening (for example, integrating screening design into the mural concept) and asked staff and the applicant to coordinate details after the meeting.
The commission voted unanimously to approve the architectural reimaging with four conditions. The applicant will return to staff as needed to finalize materials and installation details before work begins.
