Superintendent Doctor Mannarino told the North Hills School District Board on May 1 that because Allegheny County declared a state of emergency after storms on April 29, the district will not need to alter its academic calendar or make up the canceled day.
"We won't have to alter our calendar, and we will not have to make up the day that we lost on Wednesday," Doctor Mannarino said, explaining that although some parts of the community still lacked power, all district buildings regained power and the closures were limited.
Mannarino described attempts to keep buildings open and thanked Ross Township and Westview first responders for clearing roads and addressing downed power lines that blocked school entrances. He also listed several end-of-year events including Arts Alive (May 2), NHEA Excellence Awards (May 8), a mock crash at the high school on May 9 related to prom safety, music tours and the district’s last half-day of school on May 29. He said Westview Elementary’s grand reopening ribbon-cutting and tour are planned for Aug. 6, contingent on construction completion.
Board members asked if local legislators and officials would be invited to the Westview ribbon-cutting; Mannarino said they were on the invitation list and the district planned to recognize nearby residents who experienced construction disruptions.
Mannarino also reviewed transitions for fifth graders visiting the middle school, senior events, and the senior commencement scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, May 30.
