Cypress‑Fairbanks ISD benefits staff told trustees at the May 1 work session that a recent procurement for voluntary insurance brokerage and vendor consolidation produced meaningful premium reductions for many optional employee plans.
Trustees heard staff describe negotiated reductions in voluntary plans including group life (Voya), disability, dental (Cigna), vision and MetLife accident, hospital indemnity and critical‑illness coverage. Staff cited sample reductions in the voluntary lines ranging from mid‑teens to more than 50 percent for certain options and said the district achieved guaranteed multi‑year pricing for some products.
District staff said the RFP consolidated broker services and allowed the district to realize administrative efficiencies; they estimated roughly $280,000 in cost savings related to the district’s basic life coverage line. Staff stressed these voluntary plan changes do not affect core health insurance (TRS ActiveCare) and that the work focused on optional, employee‑paid products.
Trustees thanked benefits staff and urged continued review of options to reduce total employee out‑of‑pocket costs. A consent agenda item listing recommended contracts for voluntary coverage appeared on the meeting agenda; the work session did not include a final vote.
Staff said they will continue to review broader health‑insurance options and monitor trends that affect employees’ take‑home pay.
