Senate rejects bill giving special school access to nine patriotic youth groups

The Arizona Senate on May 1 failed to pass House Bill 27 24, a measure that would have given a named set of nine patriotic youth organizations special access to students in schools. The roll call closed with 9 ayes, 13 nays and the measure did not pass.
Senator Kyrsten Epstein (Arizona State Senator) rose to explain her no vote and said the bill singled out a specific list of nine organizations — including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boy Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs, Civil Air Patrol, Future Farmers, Girl Scouts, Little League Baseball, Marine Corps League and the Naval Sea Cadet Corps — and gave them priority over numerous other youth groups that also serve students. Epstein said the list created unfairness by excluding organizations such as American Youth Soccer Organization, Youth in Government programs and other community groups.
The Senate closed the vote and the clerk recorded a final tally of 9 ayes and 13 nays; the bill failed to pass the Senate.
