Board considers handbook revisions and whether members should join principal hiring panels
Summary
Board members reported they reviewed a revised board handbook and discussed whether the board should play a more direct role in school‑level administrator hiring. Staff recommended retaining the current practice (stakeholder committees, superintendent finalizes selection) but agreed to draft alternate wording for board review.

Board leadership reported that a policy subcommittee reviewed and proposed revisions to the board handbook and invited discussion on several items, including the board’s role in school‑level hiring.
Todd McKee, superintendent, and members of the board’s policy committee said the current district practice starts with a stakeholder interview committee at the school (teachers, parents, administrators), proceeds to executive‑level interviews and results in a district recommendation to the superintendent, who typically contacts board members representing the school before finalizing an offer. Board members noted practices vary across districts and that tighter board involvement in front‑end interviews can move elected members from a governance role into an operational one.
"Once you're in the room, you're always the board member, and staff are just accustomed whether we like it or not," the superintendent observed while cautioning that early board involvement can complicate lines of responsibility. The board asked staff to draft alternative wording reflecting board discretion to participate and to bring that language back for consideration at the next meeting; board members also suggested adding clearer public communication guidance to the handbook.
Next steps: staff will prepare redlined language and a shared Google doc with proposed handbook changes and a suggested public‑communication protocol for board review and vote at an upcoming meeting.
