Group Forms to Advocate for Pollard Auditorium Rebuild, Seeks to Protect Theater Space in Larger Town Project

A volunteer committee calling itself ACT for Needham (Auditorium and Community Theater for Needham) is organizing to advocate that the Pollard rebuild include a usable performance theater with backstage and support spaces, council members said.

Committee members said they have hired a website designer and a logo creator, are planning a site visit to Weymouth Middle School (a Massachusetts School Building Authority-funded project with an 850-seat theater), and intend to document features that make a theater accessible for students and community programming. The group is pursuing outreach to preserve theater elements when the town eventually rebuilds Pollard as part of a larger school project discussed at length by speakers; one speaker referenced an anticipated capital project tied to a town override in November 2026 and a $330 million rebuild figure mentioned during discussion.

Speakers emphasized that a working theater requires more than seating and a stage: backstage wings and storage, a scene shop, load-in capability and technical spaces for lighting, sound, costumes and makeup that enable expanded curriculum and community use. Committee organizers said a modernized theater could host festivals, competitions and dance, and would expand arts education opportunities for students.

The committee invited residents to join and to attend upcoming meetings; organizers also tied the effort to Goal 2.3 of Needham’s arts and culture action plan, which the speakers said calls for improved accessibility to arts and culture facilities.
