Needham Cultural Council OKs $2,000 Payment for Town Mural, Plans May 10 Celebration

The Needham Cultural Council approved a $2,000 payment to artist Mia Cross to complete a mural in the town center and scheduled a public celebration for May 10 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Council members said Mia Cross will submit a proposal, a picture of the mural and an invoice to trigger the payment. The council recorded that Town of Needham grant funds expire on June 30 and asked staff to ensure receipts and paperwork are filed so the payment can be processed from available municipal funds before that deadline.

Council members described the mural as largely completed: the wall has been painted and stenciled, with floral coloring in progress. The event planned for May 10 will include knitting activities, a children’s coloring station and refreshments provided in part by local merchants; volunteers and subcommittee members have coordinated logistics such as chairs, signage and donor acknowledgements.

The council agreed the artist will submit standard documentation. Staff said accounting will process reimbursements and, if needed, move funds between lines to cover obligations. No legal ordinance or statute was cited in the discussion.

The council also discussed event logistics (chairs, cones for pedestrian safety, coordination with nearby businesses) and outreach (flyers, social media, Hometown Weekly). The council asked volunteers to coordinate with property owners and to check with police if cones or temporary traffic controls are needed to protect foot traffic during the event.

The mural celebration and the approved payment conclude the subcommittee’s immediate responsibilities; staff will follow up to confirm paperwork and process payment.
