Deltona fire department unveils new engine and updates EMS training

Deputy T. Swisher of the Deltona Fire Department said the department received a new engine that will replace Engine 61 at the department’s main station at 1685 Providence Boulevard and described changes to equipment and training.
Swisher said the department is switching apparatus vendors and has taken delivery of a new engine built to a different vendor’s design; the unit took about three years to build and the department expects two more engines of the same type and a squad unit to arrive in the next one to three years.
On emergency medical services, Swisher said the department is adopting the i-gel airway to replace the Combitube for advanced airway management in cardiac arrest and is moving to the Handtevy drug-dosing method for pediatric and adult cardiac arrest medication calculations. He also said the department will participate in Emergency Operations Center training in May, both locally and countywide, and that several personnel will attend county EOC courses to serve as liaisons during activations.
Swisher noted recent promotions and retirements and said three new employees will begin on May 28; they will complete a three-week orientation followed by a one-year probationary period with quarterly training and testing. The remarks were presented as informational updates; no formal personnel actions, budgets or ordinance changes were proposed during the report.
