Jane Addams Middle School highlights EL supports, PBIS and Trek STEM program to Lawndale board

Principal Jamie Valentine and a team of students presented Jane Addams Middle School’s academic and extracurricular highlights to the Lawndale board on May 1, focusing on programs that support English learners, social‑emotional learning and STEM opportunities.
Valentine described recognition practices for academic achievement including honor roll and "most improved" assemblies and said the school celebrated I‑Ready proficiency and growth across trimesters. For English learners Valentine said the school serves just over 100 EL students and uses Sunday reading interventions, small‑group instruction, a designated ELD class for newcomers, ListenWise for sixth‑grade ELD and reclassification ceremonies for families.
Eighth‑grade ASB president Alvaro Rosales Jr. said the school’s PBIS team now includes a student representative and has expanded school spirit activities and rewards. "It has been nice being able to bring a student perspective to this committee and to see our ideas come to life," Alvaro said.
Valentine also highlighted the Trek program (technology, robotics, engineering and coding). Eighth‑grade student Kayla Bailey described coding and the school’s Lego League competition, saying the school’s teams placed in the top three when they competed against Royal Rogers Middle School.
The presentation included performing arts updates: a student gave a short flute preview and other students described cheer, band and visual arts partnerships. Valentine noted a photography partnership with a visiting photographer and reiterated that school efforts align with the district’s four goals through data‑driven instruction, professional learning communities and MTSS.
Board members praised students and staff for their work. Trustee Morales underscored the value of newcomer supports and Trustee Phillips encouraged students to pursue music in high school and college partnership opportunities.
