Lake County School Board tentatively approves multiple policy updates after public hearings

At its April 28 meeting, the Lake County School Board opened public hearings and tentatively approved multiple district policies covering career and technical education, exceptional student education, student promotion and placement, and several bylaws related to meetings and parent/student rights.
Board attorney Mister Cole opened the hearing by listing the policies under consideration and inviting public comment. “Yes sir, we have, for consideration, some policies,” Cole said, and the board received no public speakers during the hearings.
Superintendent Dr. Tiffany Scott recommended tentative approval of the policies “as presented.” The board then moved and voted on the items. For item 11.01, Mr. Mathias moved to tentatively approve the policies; Mrs. Cunningham seconded. The motion passed 5-0. For item 11.02, Mr. Mathias moved and Mr. Dodd seconded tentative approval; that motion also passed 5-0.
The policies the board considered in item 11.01 included (as read into the record) 02/2021 — Career and Technical Education; 02/1960 — Exceptional Student Education; and 5410.01 — Promotion, Acceleration, Placement and Retention. In item 11.02 the board opened a hearing on a second set of policies/bylaws including 131 — Legislative Policy Making; 164 — Notice of Meetings; 165 and 165.2 — Meetings/Regular Meetings (listed as rescinded); 165.3 — Special and Emergency Meetings (rescinded); 166 — Exempt Meetings (rescinded); 5780 — Student/Parent Rights; and 9270 — Home Education Programs.
Board members gave no substantive public input on the items and the public hearings were closed before each tentative vote. The actions recorded were tentative approvals; the board did not indicate final/adoption hearings or effective dates during the meeting.
The brief hearings and unanimous tentative approvals move the listed policies forward in the district review process; no public speakers opposed or amended the items during tonight’s hearings.
