Commissioners asked to approve up to $400,000 for compactor installations; replacement engine proposed for yard dog

A Solid Waste staff member asked the Board of Commissioners to approve spending up to $400,000 to purchase and install nine compactors at convenience centers and county parks. The staff member said the $400,000 estimate covers the compactors, electrical upgrades at each site, any required concrete work, steel for chutes and rebar.
"I'm asking for y'all to consider letting me spend up to $400,000 to purchase 9 compactors for the convenience centers and the parks," the staff member said during the May 1 work session. The request was moved to the consent agenda for the Tuesday business meeting for formal action.
Separately, Jacqueline (Solid Waste) requested approval to purchase a replacement motor for the department's "yard dog" unit. Jacqueline presented three quotes: a complete motor, a "drop-in" remanufactured motor, and a long-block option that would require additional assembly by public works. She said the department preferred the drop-in remanufactured motor because public works does not have the time to assemble a long block.
Jacqueline said the chosen remanufactured motor carries a one-year, 2,000-hour warranty and that an extended warranty was not available. "The motor that I am proposing to purchase does come with a 1 year 2000 hour warranty," she said, and later added that suppliers were not offering extended warranties.
Commissioners asked to place both equipment purchases on the consent agenda for the Tuesday meeting. No formal vote took place at the work session; commissioners signaled agreement to include the items for consideration on the business meeting consent agenda.
