Board takes first read of technology-responsibility policy updates, including AI guidance and email retention

The Buncombe County Board of Education received two policies for first reading Thursday that update technology-use and records-retention practices.
Greg Cheatham, policy committee chair, summarized the changes: an update to the district’s technology responsibility/use policy will add annual notifications to students, parents and employees that responsibility-use guidelines include guidance about artificial intelligence. A separate revision to electronically stored information retention would cause employee emails to be automatically retained for three years.
The board accepted the items on the information agenda; both policies were presented for first reading and will return to the board for further consideration per the district’s policy-review process. No final action or vote on the content of the policies was taken at the first reading.
Cheatham noted staff (Miss Franklin assisted in reading policy numbers) and invited questions; none were raised before the information agenda was approved.
