Operations staff updated the school committee on work at the Laurel Lane community garden during the May 1 meeting, saying large trees had been removed, volunteers were moving dirt to create new beds and a fence would be installed around the expanded plot.
Staff said community garden volunteers had respected the previously announced 25-foot buffer from neighboring property lines and that an existing natural hill provides an additional buffer. Tree-cutting of large trees had been completed; staff described forthcoming groundwork and fence installation.
Committee members and residents raised a beehive that was located in or near the garden. Facilities staff reported that there is no state or local law prohibiting beehives and that bees are generally attracted to gardens. Staff said the district had reached out to its pest-management contractor for advice and that signage warning of bees would be posted at garden entrances.
Staff also said access from the school parking lot remains available though temporarily routed around recent field and paving work; the baseball-field work was expected to finish in the next week and the paved route restored. Residents who met with staff said they were comfortable with the project details shared in the on-site meeting, and operations staff provided contact information for follow-up questions.
No committee vote was required; staff said the work will continue to be coordinated with neighbors and volunteers.
