Fox Hill building committee spends 90 minutes on door-lock options as safety design advances
Summary
Designers and the school building committee reviewed door-locking systems and trade-offs for the new Fox Hill school, including magnetic locks, electrified hardware and fire-safety egress. The committee said functionality, accessibility and cost will guide choices and that further interior design work is underway.

The Fox Hill school-building subcommittee devoted a lengthy discussion at the May 1 meeting to door locks and related hardware, focusing on how different options affect active-shooter lockdown protocols, fire egress and accessibility.
Committee members said much of the discussion involved technical trade-offs: mortise locks vs. electrified hardware, magnetic (maglock) holds tied to fire alarms, and whether electrified locks should be at the hinge level or the latch. A security consultant presented multiple options and committee members asked practical questions about operation, maintenance and cost.
Committee members and the districts facilities representatives discussed scenarios such as power loss and the interaction between fire alarms and lockdown signals. A consultant explained that magnetic holds are designed so that loss of power causes the magnet to release and the door to close and lock; committee members noted that backup power and wiring approaches affect both safety and cost.
The committee said the interior working group will continue to select finishes and hardware as part of the design-phase work and that the next pricing update will reflect chosen door-lock systems. Committee members emphasized the need to balance security needs with accessibility, regulatory compliance and budget constraints.
No formal vote was taken; members asked staff to keep the security team and police informed as the design options narrow and to return with cost estimates for the selected hardware.
