Students lead mock county council discussion on amenities and infrastructure for new regional park

Lancaster County hosted an initiative in which students served as council members to discuss potential amenities for a new regional park and the infrastructure needed to support them, county communications said.

A county council member who participated in the event told students that planning amenities requires attention to supporting infrastructure. "You know about projects like this, you just think it's about all the fun stuff you're gonna put in there. Right? Well, you gotta make sure the fun stuff can sit in a piece of property that is stable and that will support it," the council member said, adding that electrical, plumbing and drainage must be considered.

The communications update said students were prepared with questions and received feedback from local council members; officials framed the initiative as a leadership-building exercise that lets students apply classroom skills to real-world county decisions. Another council member who spoke at the event described the responsibility of serving on county council: "What I love most about being on county council is looking at all the issues that impact all of us. We have a very different dynamic throughout the entire county. I work for all of you. You all are my boss." County communications did not provide a list of student participants, attendance numbers, or any formal policy or budget outcomes tied to the exercise.
