State board releases attendance audit and asks staff to share executive summary with legislators

After receiving an internal attendance audit, the board voted to release the report and directed staff to forward the audit — with its executive summary — to state legislators and to work with board members on possible solutions.
The Utah State Board of Education voted to release an internal audit of school attendance reporting and directed staff to forward the report — at minimum the executive summary — to members of the Utah Legislature.
The board also asked staff to encourage legislators to read the audit and to work with state board members on “possible solutions concerning the report,” a motion that passed unanimously.
Audit committee members said the attendance report contains data and findings that merit legislative attention. After discussion, the board instructed staff to distribute the executive summary and provide legislators with contact direction so board members can participate in follow-up conversations.
Board leadership noted the audit will also be available publicly; members said briefing the Legislature could help inform interim study and possible policy changes. The board emphasized the audit release does not itself propose legislation; rather, the motion asks staff to share the findings and invite dialogue about remedies and next steps.
The board later voted to adopt the full fiscal year 2026 budget and carried on with committee business.
