Needham committee says three commemorative benches are in place; two more proposed

At its April 30 meeting, the Revitalization Trust Fund reported that three commemorative “celebration” benches have been completed or placed in town, and that two more are in permitting or planning stages.
The committee said the Soderholm bench has been installed in Avery Square and the Ron Sockle bench is at Memorial Field pending a concrete pad. A third bench (referred to in meeting materials as the tonnolier bench) is built and awaiting installation in a concrete footing at the top of a ramp leading into Avery. Committee members said they coordinated timing around a request to have the Ron Sockle bench in place before May 6 for a birthday observation; the committee noted Ron Sockle will turn 95 and his wife’s birthday is May 28.
Why it matters: the benches are the trust fund’s public commemoration vehicle for residents and volunteers. Installations require coordination with Park and Forestry, concrete contractors and, for benches on conservation land or public paths, conservation-commission or Select Board approvals.
Details: committee members said two of the three benches are already placed and the pending bench requires concrete footings. The committee reported a contractor is scheduling installation toward the end of the week after the meeting (weather permitting) and that staff will mark the installation location and coordinate with the contractor to place the bench once footings are poured. Two other bench proposals are in process: one for the Valente Path (a conservation path that will need conservation-commission signoff) to honor a long-serving postal carrier, and a request for a bench in front of the Starbucks in The Heights, where a local group of riders meets regularly. The committee said town Department of Public Works staff agreed to redeploy an existing bench if a sponsored celebration bench is installed in that location.
The committee also noted that two celebration benches remain on the Town Common beside the bus stop and that Park and Forestry preserved the surrounding cobblestone/brick work when the bus stop was reconfigured.
No formal vote was taken on any of the bench locations at the April 30 meeting; members described coordination steps and next logistics rather than making approvals.
Looking ahead: the committee said staff and a contractor would confirm specific installation dates once concrete and contractor availability align, and the committee will follow up with conservation or Select Board signoffs where required.
