Fire chief credits Parks & Rec and Public Works for limiting fireworks incidents after Fourth of July show

The Sahuarita fire chief thanked the town’s Parks and Recreation and Public Works crews Monday for their role in limiting fire risk during the Fourth of July fireworks display.
The chief told the council that Parks and Recreation and Public Works staff coordinated pre-event work — including cutting fire breaks, mowing, digging holes for fireworks and wetting down staging and adjacent areas — while crews worked in extreme heat. The chief said crews’ actions limited the evening to two small, quickly mitigated incidents that did not spread beyond the control area.
He singled out Parks and Rec coordinator Dylan, Alex (Roman) for cutting fire breaks, Mario Troutwine for mowing and Public Works’ John Lyra and David Yerkidis for wetting down areas and other support. “We ended up with only two small incidents that night. We were able to quickly mitigate them and nothing spread,” the chief said.
Council members acknowledged the departments’ work and thanked staff for the extra effort during a busy summer.
