The proclamation stresses that drowning is a leading cause of injury and death for children and teens in Arizona and highlights prevention strategies such as constant supervision, restricting access to water, life jackets, swim lessons and rapid emergency response including CPR.
Tom Murphy read the proclamation and affixed the town seal. A coalition representative urged residents to be vigilant around pools and lakes; she said Pima County experienced three water-related incidents this summer, one of them fatal, and she asked that anyone supervising swimmers be the designated attentive watcher because “somebody always thinks somebody else is watching.”
The proclamation asks communities and citizens statewide to participate in coordinated drowning-prevention efforts during August.
