City staff presented a draft tourism initiative grant aimed at nonprofit organizations seeking funding for tourism‑related facility improvements, and asked the commission for feedback.
Staff said the program is intended to complement existing facade and mural programs but is targeted to nonprofits and can fund a broader set of improvements — including signage, ADA accessibility work, outdoor site improvements, visitor engagement features, infrastructure for event venues and public art installations. Staff stated award requests could be “up to $30,000” and that the grant requires a 50/50 match and operates as a reimbursement program.
The grant would be funded from the city’s tourism fund and, if approved by the commission and City Council, staff proposed launching the program in July with the new budget year. Staff noted eligible projects could be citywide (not limited to downtown) and that projects in designated infill districts may also receive building permit fee waivers.
Commissioners asked why the grant was limited to nonprofits and whether nonprofits could apply for the city’s other facade or mural programs; staff said nonprofits can apply to other programs but that this grant is meant to help larger nonprofit projects whose costs often exceed existing program caps. Staff confirmed applications would require documentation of the nonprofit’s plan to cover the non‑city match, and reiterated the grant model is reimbursement‑based rather than an upfront award.
