Council accepts $100,860 Operation Stone Garden grant for overtime enforcement

Sierra Vista City Council voted Feb. 13 to accept a $100,860 grant from the Arizona Department of Homeland Security to fund Operation Stone Garden enforcement activities.
The police chief told the council the grant reimburses overtime and related employee expenses, including public safety personnel retirement reimbursement, and supports proactive high-visibility enforcement details that have been productive in apprehending criminal activity and reducing contraband entering the community. "This program has actually been in existence in one form or another since about 02/2005," the chief said, noting partnerships with U.S. Border Patrol and the Cochise County Sheriff's Office.
Councilman Mark Rodriguez moved to accept the grant agreement (Operation Stone Garden agreement 240425-01); the motion was seconded and passed on a voice vote. The chief said he had shared deployment data with the council at a prior work session to show the program's productivity.
The acceptance authorizes the city to claim grant reimbursements for overtime and related public-safety personnel expenses and to continue cooperative deployments with regional partners under the grant terms.
