York County proclaims May 2025 Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month; ABATE chapter highlights outreach

The York County Board of Commissioners proclaimed May 2025 as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month at its April 30 meeting. Vice President Commissioner Burford read the proclamation and meeting remarks said the document was signed by all three county commissioners.
The proclamation and meeting remarks emphasized driver awareness and rider education as tools to reduce motorcycle crashes. "The safety of all York County motorists is a priority," Commissioner Burford said while reading the proclamation. The proclamation referenced efforts such as the Operation Save a Life program, which is presented to high school students and civic groups to teach driver awareness of motorcyclists.
Representatives of ABATE of Pennsylvania's Mason Dixon chapter attended the meeting. Dale Brandt, the chapter coordinator, told commissioners the chapter performs outreach in Adams and York counties and that in 2024 the Mason Dixon chapter "educated over 3,000 students within Adams in York County." The proclamation and remarks also included traffic figures cited at the meeting: meeting material and remarks noted that last year York County recorded 4,594 traffic incidents, 127 of which were related to motorcycles, and that statewide Pennsylvania recorded 105,390 traffic incidents with 3,093 involving motorcycles.
Commissioners encouraged motorists to be alert for motorcycles and to participate in educational programs; no formal policy or funding changes were announced during the proclamation.
