City staff said the assessment will evaluate shoreline geology and site conditions so engineers can recommend the right combination of ‘green’ and traditional infrastructure. “Living shorelines are basically like hybrids of green infrastructure like trees and plants and all that stuff, plus if we need to the traditional, like, seawall or other type of, traditional infrastructure that would go for flood resilience,” said Alana, a staff member who outlined the DEP-funded work.
The commission discussion focused on scope rather than budget trade-offs; staff characterized the task order as prework required by the DEP grant and said the assessment will determine what type of installation — vegetation, structural elements or a hybrid — is appropriate at each site. The project list includes JC Park and Mangrove Park and one additional location identified in the grant documents.
