Council committee advances appointment of emergency-management advisory nominee after minor amendments

The Committee on Public Safety and Customer Services on May 1 reported out for adoption an amended resolution confirming a nominee to the Citizens Advisory Commission on Emergency Management.
The committee recommended adoption of Resolution 205-102 as amended to the hand-carried CD1 and proposed that, if confirmed, the nominee serve a term to expire March 31, 2030. The chair said the first "be it resolved" clause was changed to confirm the appointment for a term expiring on 03/31/2030 and that other technical and non‑substantive edits were made.
The nominee participated remotely. Crystal Van Valen, who identified herself on the Zoom feed as a Hawaiian Airlines employee, told the committee she was "very happy to be appointed, willing to do whatever it takes to support our city and county." Committee Vice Chair Kia Aina thanked the nominee and said she was "one of the most qualified nominees" the committee had seen.
A public hearing on the appointment had been held April 16, 2025, and the committee's hand-carried CD1 amended several whereas and resolved clauses, including a city charter reference and a mayor's message citation. No in-person or remote public testimony was offered at the meeting on this item.
The chair recommended the amended resolution be reported out for adoption; there was no objection and the action was ordered.
Members will consider the resolution as reported out by the committee at the next available council adoption step.
