The commission granted Amanda Etinge three special one-day licenses to sell and dispense wine and malt beverages at the Hellenic Center, 41 Broadway St., for Sierra Leone Independence Day on May 3 (7 p.m.–1:30 a.m.), a 60th birthday celebration on May 17 (7 p.m.–1:30 a.m.) and the Bavadeco USA convention and fundraiser on May 24 (7 p.m.–1:30 a.m.). Etinge told the commission she expects between 50 and 200 attendees for those events. Commissioner Donahue moved approval; Commissioner Krieger seconded, and the motion carried.
Stanley Tabby received a special one-day license to sell wine and malt beverages for the annual Mecca New England fundraiser at the Hellenic Center on May 10 (7 p.m.–midnight). Tabby told the commission the fundraiser will support a nonprofit humanitarian course in Africa and said he expects about 200 attendees or fewer. Commissioner Krieger moved approval; Commissioner Mercier seconded, and the motion carried.
Penny Hamorgas of the Worthen House Cafe was granted an amplified outdoor public entertainment permit for "Lowell's May Jam Session" on May 17 from noon to 5 p.m. Hamorgas said the event will feature a two-piece jazz band for roughly one to two hours in the afternoon. Commissioner Donahue moved approval; Commissioner Krieger seconded, and the motion carried.
The commission approved a common victualler license application for Vasa Traders LLC doing business as Subway at 254 Merrimack St.; applicant Vishal Amin confirmed required food-safety certifications were submitted. Commissioner Krieger moved approval; Commissioner Tang seconded, and the motion carried.
Two public hearings on license-alteration applications also concluded with approvals. MBOA Alliance LLC doing business as Sahel Restaurant and Lounge was approved to alter its licensed premises for an all-alcoholic-beverages restaurant license at 135 Central St.; licensed manager Peter Tamajang confirmed the application listed 10 tables and said workers' compensation and liability insurance had been submitted as required. Commissioner Krieger moved approval; Commissioner Tang seconded, and the motion carried after the commission opened and closed both the pro- and anti- public-comment periods.
New Star MA Inc., doing business as Coto (COTO Asian Fusion), received commission approval to alter its premises for an all-alcoholic-beverages restaurant license at 76 Meramec St.; licensed manager Devin Kennison confirmed eight sidewalk tables and indicated liability insurance was in place. Commissioner Krieger moved approval; Commissioner Mercier seconded, and the motion carried after the public hearing drew no speakers for or against the application.
The commission also noted communications from licensees about incidents at two establishments, the Village Acre (Village Pub and Grill) and the Village Smokehouse; commissioners praised those licensees for calling police when incidents occurred. The commission adjourned after routine business.
Actions taken at the meeting were procedural and unanimous on the recorded motions; no substantive policy changes or contested votes were recorded during these agenda items.
